The common core state standards provide a clear, consistent understanding of what is expected of student learning across the country. The common core state standards require that students develop a depth of understanding and ability to apply mathematics to real world situations and obtain the skills that they will need to be college and career ready. Below is your child’s daily math routine. Please be aware that homework is just as important as any unit assessment given during the year. As we review the homework from the previous night, I am able to correct and intervene as needed. The sharing of one’s learning with a fellow classmate lends itself to mastery of a specific skill. If a child can orally explain his/her thinking then he/she has a clear understanding of that skill. Students will be actively engaged throughout their math block and will use “math talk” to share their problem solving strategies with their classmates. It is essential that your child master his/her addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts. Reviewing of these facts should be done on a daily basis and is essential to your child’s mastery of 5th grade standards.

Routine for Mrs. Abby’s Math Class


  1. Work on problem of the day individually and/or with group members/ Number Line Activity

Throughout the year, your child will be composing an individual math portfolio. Within this portfolio, your child will see his/her growth throughout the year in the following areas: math facts, vocabulary, unit assessments, multiple choice & open response questions. This portfolio will stay in school until the end of the year.


Every Day Math!

At the end of the day in each homeroom, students will be engaged in a new supplemental math program called, “Every Day Counts.” In just 10-minutes a day, Every Day Counts provides supplemental math instruction that revolves around a simple interactive bulletin board with a variety of elements, or components. Throughout the year, students will build on their mathematical understanding and confidence.

 Year at a Glance

For the 2014-2015 school year, students will focus on three critical areas in math. Within these three areas students will master new concepts that they will need in order to be successful in middle school.
